MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Church of the Nazarene is to make Christlike disciples in the nations. We are a Great Commission church (Matthew 28:19-20). As a global community of faith, we are commissioned to take the Good News of life in Jesus Christ to people everywhere and to spread the message of scriptural holiness (Christlike living) across the lands. Nazarenes are becoming a sent people— into homes, work places, communities, and villages, as well as other cities and countries. Missionaries are now sent from all regions of the world. God continues calling ordinary people to do extraordinary things made possible by the person of the Holy Spirit.

BELIEFS

These are the beliefs Nazarenes hold to be true:

We believe in one God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.

We believe that man is born with a fallen nature, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.

We believe that the finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.

We believe that the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; and that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.

We believe that believers are to be sanctified wholly, subsequent to regeneration, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth, and also to the entire sanctification of believers.

We believe that our Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.

HISTORY

Central Church of the Nazarene is a part of the Church of the Nazarene with over 2.5 million members worldwide.  The Church of the Nazarene traces its anniversary date to 1908. Its organization was a marriage that, like every marriage, linked existing families and created a new one. The church was founded as the Lord brought together sincere believers who were experiencing the life-changing power of God in their revivals and church services. Utilizing evangelism, compassionate ministries, and education, their church went forth to become a people of many cultures and tongues. Central Church began in 1940 with a group of faithful followers of Christ meeting together in a rented building in Kansas City, Kansas. The world was at war and great uncertainty at nearly every turn, but with a missionary zeal and a desire to reach people with the love of Christ, the passion of the early members was evident as they soon purchased a building at 10th and Pacific. As lives were impacted and the church began to grow, they relocated to 18th and Barnett in the 1960’s and in 1981, Central moved to its current location on 87th Street Parkway. Throughout many years, there have been many great pastors and laymen alike who have been faithful and joyful in their service to the Lord and to Central Church. The result is a great church that is making a difference in the Kingdom of God.
